Voices of Women (VOW) Leadership Project
VOICES OF WOMEN (VOW)
A national standing committee of 12 women who utilize CAAN’s communities, alliances and networks to liaise with thousands of Indigenous, Métis and Inuit women in Canada on healing journeys.We use and sharing empowering actions that help to amplify the voices of Indigenous Women.
DECOLONIZING HEALTHCARE THROUGH CULTURE
We’ve learned that Indigenous, Métis and Inuit peoples in Canada who have experienced discrimination tend to delay seeking medical attention and even then, will often downplay, ignore or even deny symptoms of ill health.
Our journey so far has demonstrated the importance of reclaiming culture as a means to improved health outcomes.As we immerse ourselves in traditional ways of knowing and doing, we look to not only decolonize, but re-Indigenize healthcare for ourselves and our communities.
Currently, VOW is using the sacred teachings of traditional ribbon-skirt-making as a tool in wholistic healing.We invite all organizations who work with Indigenous women to join us – VOW will provide teachings and a beautiful handmade applique of the historic international AIDS red ribbon.

CAAN International HIV research to improve sexual and reproductive health of Indigenous women

The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN), Canada’s only national Indigenous HIV and STBBI organization, is leading a new international collaboration that will investigate womxn living with HIV. developed over the past 16 years between 7 countries, CAAN was awarded $3.5 million CAD over five years from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The grant scored first in a field of 30 applications, of which nine were funded.
